ESports Stars Out-Earn Olympians

The top esports stars are now earning more than the some of the Olympic athletes.

Just a few years ago a statement like this would have been unfathomable. ESports, for a time, was seen as a juvinele hobby, at best. Not any more.

Many people are not aware that the vast majority of Olympic athletes do not actually earn that much money.

An ever growing proportion of US athletes are turning to GoFundMe pages to secure their hope of reaching the Olympics.

Yes, we know the likes of Bolt earn big money from sponsorship deals but there isn’t much call for sponsorship of sports such as canoeing or table tennis.

Athletes in the UK rely heavily on funding from the National Lottery, without it they struggle to survive.

In contrast top ESports players are now earning huge sums. Wings Gaming just won over $9m by claiming The International 2016.

Stars playing in the NA LCS are guaranteed $25,000 per year before factoring in tournament prize money and sponsorship deals.

Is it fair?

Hell yes it’s fair.

ESports stars, just as Olympians, dedicate their lives to their craft. Why should they be any less deserving?

It is suprising that Olympians get paid so little but it would be unfair to then try and degrade the value of ESports stars because of that.

They aren’t just given the money, there is an estimate 150,000,000 ESports fans around the globe. They happily pay to watch the events they deem entertaining.

ESports is seeing unprecedented levels of growth at the minute and I for one am excited to see where it leads.
